As an Orthodox Rabbi, Sam must prevent a the family of David's from completely falling apart when he performs the Bat Mitzvah of his niece Karen, and the daughter of his brother Joe (James Sutorius), as his sister-in-law, Irene (played by Terri Hanauer), Joe's wife, contemplates having an affair after she dances with a friend, Bert Glasserman (Russ Tamblyn). Joe is a bitter man due to the loss of their son Danny, who died in a plane crash, and has stopped communicating with their daughter as well. Sam has to bring them all together and save the family, which he is able to accomplish when he is able to present her with a draft of a how-to-seduce-grieving-women" book which Bert plans on getting published, thus thwarting the affair which ruins the family.
