About Doc[]

Sam leaps into Lester "Doc" Fuller, a 35-year-old, minor league pitcher playing for the Galveston Mustangs, a AAA team there in Texas, in 1961. Doc had been in the majors as a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, until one of his pitches hit somebody in the head in a game against the Detroit Tigers, and killed him. He disappeared for a while, eventually ending up in the minors.

Sam leaps into Doc to get him to help a fellow player (Chucky Myerwich) who has a much better chance of making the big leagues, deal with anger and alcohol issues and meet and reconcile with his estranged father, Warren Monroe (Casey Sander), whom Chucky has never met, while not hindering his leapees own chances of making it back to the majors, and preventing him from killing himself out of frustration for not making it back to the majors. To Sam's chagrin, Doc has been ooling around with Margaret Twilly (played by Maree Cheatham) the female team owner, who promises to get him another shot at the majors as "extortion", as she cajoles Doc to sleep with her so that he can start games.

Sam is somehow able to accomplish all that he's sent to do in the situation, while resisting Maree's advances, as he also has to and also accomplishes keeping Chucky's affair with Bunny Twilly (Courtney Gebhart), Maree's daughter, from getting found out by Maree, who threatens to kick him off of the team, as she eventually finds out, anyway.
